It is January 16, the day before we leave for Peru. From what I (Elgin) can tell we think we are ready... ready for the English Camp and ready for the Men's Retreat. The English Camp is a no brainer. They have been doing it for years. It is all planned out, people have been working on their curriculum and most have done it before anyway. They know what they are doing.
It is the Men's Retreat that has me a little apprehensive. If I compare it to the English Camp I find a lot of opposites.
- This is the first Men's Retreat, we have not been doing it for years.
- It is planned out but always with the caveat of "be flexible." We think we have a schedule but no one thinks we will follow it. It is the Cold Climate people and the Warm Climate people. The Cold Climate people are all uptight about following schedules and getting things done on time. The Warm Climate people have a much healthier attitude in that they take things as they come. Time is important but does not rule them. Schedules are helpful but... there is always mañana. We have a schedule but I have no confidence we will follow it: so, why do we have a schedule?
- While the English Camp knows what they are doing, we at the Men's Retreat don't.
- We don't speak the language - None of us know Spanish except Josh hand he just started taking it this year.
- We have never been to the retreat site. Will the room be big enough? Will there be enough sleeping rooms? Can we really have a nice agape dinner and decorate for it?
- We have never met any of the men. When I meet with a group of men here in the states I know pretty well what it will be like. We have things in common such as sports, business, politics, food, religion, and women (wives). I have no idea what makes these guys tic. Of course it doesn't matter because I can't talk to them anyway.
- That reminds me, five of us are giving talks. Your are supposed to know your audience when you give a talk. Not so.
I'm not winning, I'm just wondering what God has in store for us because I know it is not what we have on our schedule.
Should be fun.
